 Message from the Database

This is the inaugural newsletter of the World Database for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery (WDPCHS). This newsletter will be distributed quarterly with updates to the database. Entering the third year of the World Database, 61 hospitals are now enrolled representing 20 countries with a collective 19,435 surgeries entered. We are happy to report that one-year follow up status is known for 67 percent of our patients. Enthusiasm for the database continues to grow and centers are enrolling rapidly.

Sincerely,
James K. Kirklin, Database Chair
James D. St. Louis, Database Vice Chair/Secretary
Marcelo B. Jatene, WSPCHS President
Christo I. Tchervenkov, WSPCHS Executive Director

 Web Based Data Entry Updates

Since the launch of the World Database, four updates have been released to the system. The development team is working to continue to enhance the data entry site. We welcome all feedback and suggestions from sites and review these regularly with the database team for updates to the system.

The first major revision to the web based data entry system is in progress and will be available soon. An announcement will be made when the revision goes live and the updated forms and form manual will be available on the website. Plans for upcoming revisions include:

  • Expanded and revised list of diagnoses for Tier 1 and Tier 2 patients
  • Expanded and revised list of procedures for Tier 1 and Tier 2 patients
  • Ability to submit batch data from Chinese hospitals
  • Ability to translate the database into other languages
  • Addition of six month follow up form
  • Revisions to one year follow up form
  • Post-Operative Events form is changing its name to be the ‘Discharge/90 days form’

 Database Participating Centers

We would like to welcome all centers participating in the World Database. During the inaugural year of data collection in 2017, 24 hospitals enrolled representing 17 countries. Sixty-one hospitals representing 20 countries are now participating in the database. A complete list of participating hospitals is available on the World Database website; Participating hospitals

Changes in Data Quality (DQ) Process

Currently, sites receive a monthly DQ report that lists patients at their site identified by various data integrity checks and lists all surgeries entered and occurring during the report period. These reports are uploaded to the web based data entry system for sites to review and sign off on each month. The database will be changing the way data integrity checks are done by implementing a ‘sticky note messaging system’. Data inconsistencies identified will be flagged with a sticky note and a notification will be sent to the user to verify the data. The user will then be able to make the correction directly on the form and/or reply to the sticky note that the data have been verified.

Additionally, users will be able to view a count of how many surgeries were entered during each month and have the ability to verify this surgery count directly in the database.
